2026 International CCUS Technology Conference in Astana — Sinopec participation

Conference overview
The 2026 International CCUS Technology Conference was held in Astana on September 1–2. More than 230 representatives from government departments, international organisations, universities, research institutions and enterprises from dozens of countries attended to exchange on low-carbon energy transformation and CCUS technology achievements.
Speakers and positions
At the opening ceremony speakers included He Junko (Vice Chairman and First Secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology), Liu Zhenmin (China's Special Envoy for Climate Change), Han Chunlin (Chinese Ambassador to Kazakhstan), Tian Hongbin (Vice General Manager of Sinopec) and Ricardo Savigliano (Head of the Energy Systems and Industrial Decarbonization Department, UNIDO).
Initiatives and cooperation
The conference, co-hosted by the ICTO, Sinopec, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy and the INMET Center of Nazarbayev University, released an 'Energy Low-Carbon Cooperation Development Initiative' calling on parties to deepen technical cooperation, take part in standards development and strengthen personnel exchanges to address climate challenges.
Sinopec and ICTO activity
Delegates were reminded that in July 2025 Sinopec led the establishment of the International Carbon Dioxide Capture, Utilization and Storage Technology Innovation Cooperation Organization (ICTO) with founding members from more than 20 countries and regions. Tian Hongbin outlined Sinopec's plans to build two large-scale CCUS application bases in the Bohai Bay Basin and the Yangtze River Delta and reported on site visits including the Silleno project in Atyrau and briefings from Kazakh companies and institutions.
