Deal overview
BHP has entered agreements to divest the Kambalda Nickel Concentrator (KNC) and a package of tenements and mineralisation rights to Gold Fields. These agreements will transfer ownership of KNC and the associated tenements and mineralisation rights to Gold Fields, subject to satisfaction of certain conditions including regulatory approvals. Completion is expected during CY2027.
Transition and workforce
Gold Fields will evaluate options for the long‑term use of the concentrator and has committed to offer employment to people directly supporting the asset. BHP will continue to manage the asset safely and responsibly through to completion, including meeting cultural heritage, regulatory and environmental obligations, and will work closely with Gold Fields to ensure a successful transition.
Background and timing
In July 2024 BHP temporarily suspended its Western Australia Nickel assets citing global oversupply; the remainder of the WA Nickel assets remain in temporary suspension. BHP intends to review that decision by February 2027, assessing options including divestment, continuing temporary suspension, restart or closure in consultation with stakeholders.
