BASF Consolidates Asian PolyTHF Operations

Consolidation Strategy

BASF is addressing structural changes in the global chemical fiber market by consolidating its Asian polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF®) business. The company will centralize production at its Caojing site in China and discontinue operations at the Ulsan site in South Korea by 2026.

Production Capacity

Post-consolidation, BASF will maintain a reliable supply of PolyTHF through its production sites in Caojing, China; Ludwigshafen, Germany; and Geismar, United States. The total annual production capacity will remain at 250,000 metric tons.

PolyTHF Applications

PolyTHF is a crucial starting material for elastic spandex and elastane fibers, widely used in textiles such as swimsuits, sportswear, and underwear.
