Project scope

A MemCor membrane bioreactor (MBR) system has been selected to support the upgrade of the Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre in Canberra. The new MBR will add approximately 97 million liters per day of treatment capacity as part of a new secondary treatment process centered on advanced membrane technology.

Delivery and ownership

The facility is owned and operated by Icon Water. The upgrade is being delivered in collaboration with Seymour Whyte and VINCI Construction Grands Projects.

Capacity, history and technology

Lower Molonglo has been the primary wastewater treatment plant for the Australian Capital Territory since the late 1970s. The addition of the MemCor MBR—manufactured in Australia—will increase treatment capacity, produce high-quality effluent for safe discharge, and position the plant as the largest MBR installation in Australia. MemCor MBR systems with MemPulse modules have been used in municipal and industrial installations for over 30 years.
