Alfa Laval introduces 25% recycled titanium in gasketed plate heat exchangers
- Alfa Laval produced titanium plates with 25% recycled content at its gasketed plate heat exchanger factory in Jiangyin, China.
- Recycled content was increased from 10% to 25% by collecting manufacturing waste and having it remelted by a major titanium supplier.
- The production run is a small-scale batch and units using the recycled plates will be delivered to customers in China.
- Alfa Laval says scaling the initiative will require broader supply-chain changes and continued collaboration with industrial partners.
Breakthrough
Alfa Laval has produced titanium plates containing 25% recycled content at its gasketed plate heat exchanger factory in Jiangyin, China, raising recycled material in plates from 10% to 25%. The initial production is a small-scale batch, and gasketed plate heat exchangers using these plates will be delivered to customers in China.
Technical approach
Titanium’s corrosion resistance is valued, but increasing recycled content while maintaining formability is challenging. Alfa Laval collected and recycled its manufacturing waste and had it remelted at a titanium supplier, working closely with a major supplier to ensure every plate met required quality expectations.
Scale and supply-chain implications
Alfa Laval frames the work as a technical validation of high-quality recycled titanium in real-world production and says scaling requires a broader systemic shift across the supply chain supported by continued collaboration with industrial partners.
