Project and opening
AkzoNobel has opened a €7.5 million innovation lab at its Sassenheim site, strengthening the company’s largest global R&D centre. The facility was officially opened by Dutch Minister of Climate and Green Growth Stientje van Veldhoven.
R&D focus
The lab will be primarily focused on powder coatings, accelerating development of solvent-free and energy-efficient coating solutions. Work will include lower-temperature curing technologies to reduce energy use, improvements in application and coating performance, and advanced particle analysis.
Objectives
Research will target customer productivity improvements, extended product lifetimes, reduced maintenance and material use, and opportunities to cut carbon emissions across the value chain. The company has reduced Scopes 1 and 2 CO₂ emissions by 50% against a 2018 baseline.
Scale and capability
AkzoNobel employs around 2,700 R&D professionals across 70 laboratories and has invested more than €1.3 billion in research and development over the last five years.
