MoU Signing

ADNOC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of North Rhine-Westphalia and Currenta GmbH & Co. OHG to explore the creation of a low-carbon ammonia value chain. The agreement aims to support the climate-neutral transformation of industry in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia.

Key Figures

The MoU was signed in Dusseldorf by Mona Neubaur, Deputy Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Musabbeh Al Kaabi, Executive Director at ADNOC, and Frank Hyldmar, CEO of Currenta. The primary focus will be on the production and transportation of low-carbon ammonia, with industrial-scale testing planned at Currenta’s Dormagen site.

Ammonia's Role

Ammonia, a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen, can be used as a low-carbon fuel in various industrial applications, including transportation, power generation, and the production of steel, cement, and fertilizer. The development of global supply chains for ammonia is crucial for its potential role in decarbonization.

ADNOC's Investments

ADNOC has already invested in low-carbon ammonia, capturing and storing CO2 emitted during production. In May 2021, the company announced a 1 million tons per year low-carbon ammonia production facility at the TA'ZIZ industrial ecosystem in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi. ADNOC has also shipped demonstration cargoes of low-carbon ammonia to customers in Asia and Germany as part of the UAE-Germany Energy Security and Industry Accelerator (ESIA) Agreement.

Future Plans

ADNOC is further investing in renewable energy through Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), aiming to position the UAE at the forefront of the energy transition.
