Investment and Timeline
Evonik has approved the construction of a new production plant for high-quality flat films made from multi-layer polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) at its Weiterstadt site. The company plans to invest a double-digit million sum in this project. The plant is expected to supply the initial commercial film batches by the end of 2018, creating several new jobs in the process.
Technological Advancements
The new plant will enable the production of extremely wide films with a previously unachieved number of layers. This advancement will allow for the creation of completely new film compositions, expanding the offerings of custom-designed specialty films. These films are designed to provide genuine added value to both customers and consumers, offering new design and processing possibilities.
Applications and Benefits
Multi-layered PMMA films have applications in medical technology, window and façade construction, and the graphics industry. For instance, Evonik recently showcased façade elements made from fiberglass plates with a top layer of PLEXIGLAS® film at the BAU 2017 tradeshow. These elements are designed to protect the thermoset resin and glass fibers while providing an aesthetically pleasing appearance. The new multi-layer films will ensure the longevity of such exterior components, meeting the increasing demand for long-lasting and sustainable products, particularly in the construction and architecture segments.
