Investment and Expansion
Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has completed the expansion of its Baypren polychloroprene solid rubber production operations in Dormagen, investing EUR 18 million. The expansion includes a new production line that uses innovative dry finishing technology, which reduces the number of production steps and conserves resources.
Innovative Production Technology
The dry finishing technology at the Baypren facility reduces water usage and wastewater generation by dehydrating the rubber in a special extrusion device. This process also eliminates the need for natural gas, reducing waste air production.
New Product Variants
As part of the expansion, LANXESS introduced two new Baypren grades: "Baypren High Performance" and "Baypren Green Finishing." These variants offer enhanced crosslinking and optimized flow behavior, improving the speed of the injection molding process and reducing energy consumption.
Increased Production Capacity
The expansion has increased LANXESS' annual production capacity in Dormagen by 10%, bringing the total to 63,000 metric tons of solid rubber. The existing production lines will continue to operate to meet ongoing demand for traditional Baypren grades.
Applications and Uses
Baypren high-performance rubber is versatile, with applications in the automotive sector, including windshield wipers, hoses, belts, seals, insulating foams, and air springs. It is also used in watersports suits and dinghy floats, providing protection and ensuring no air escapes.
Dormagen Site
With around 1,000 employees, Dormagen is the third largest LANXESS production site in Germany and a key location for synthetic rubber production. The Baypren facility employs approximately 250 staff and is part of LANXESS' High Performance Elastomers business unit.
