Investment and Expansion
Specialty chemicals company LANXESS is investing around EUR 10 million to expand its Leverkusen site. This includes a new production line for weakly acidic cation exchange resins and a state-of-the-art facility for food-grade-standard filling and packaging. The expansion aims to increase production capacity by more than 30% to meet growing demand.
Construction Timeline
Construction work for the additional volumes required to meet global market demands has already begun and is scheduled for completion by mid-2014. The new building for filling products for foodstuff applications will cover an area of 300 square meters, ensuring high standards for product purity and quality.
Product Applications
LANXESS is a leading manufacturer of ion exchange resins, with its Lewatit range used in various industries, including food and beverage, chemical catalysis, power plants, and pharmaceutical biofermentation. The new facilities will support the production of these premium products, particularly for domestic water filter systems that improve drinking water quality by removing unwanted ions.
Business Unit Renaming
As of April 1, 2013, the Ion Exchange Resins business unit has been renamed Liquid Purification Technologies (LPT). This change reflects the expanded product portfolio, which now includes membrane filtration technology for reverse osmosis. The renaming signifies a commitment to developing and marketing advanced solutions for water and liquid media treatment.
Segment Performance
The Liquid Purification Technologies business unit is part of LANXESS' Performance Chemicals segment, which recorded sales of EUR 2.2 billion in fiscal 2012. This strategic expansion and renaming aim to position LPT as a leading global provider of liquid treatment solutions.
