MDI Plant Expansion

Dow Polyurethanes has successfully started production at its newly expanded diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) plant in Estarreja, Portugal. The facility now provides both polymeric and crude MDI, enhancing supply flexibility and reliability for customers. The expansion, announced in 2006, was completed without any interruptions in customer service.

Production and Applications

MDI is a crucial raw material used in the production of rigid polyurethane foam and polyurethane elastomers. These materials are essential in various end-use markets, including home, commercial, and industrial foam insulation, refrigeration, appliances, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and elastomers.

Global Production Network

Dow currently produces and distills MDI at several facilities worldwide, including locations in Freeport and La Porte, Texas; Yeosu, South Korea; Stade, Germany; Delfzijl, The Netherlands; and Estarreja, Portugal. This global network ensures a steady and reliable supply of MDI to meet market demands.
