New Facility Announcement
Hexion Specialty Chemicals, Inc. announced the construction of a new production facility in Esslingen, Germany, to produce specialty epoxy resins for windmill blades in the wind energy market. The 10,000 square meter facility will include production, warehousing, an applications laboratory, and offices. It will be a blending-only operation without chemical reactors.
Transition and Employment
The new facility will replace a smaller Hexion site in Stuttgart, transferring 50 employees to Esslingen once it is commissioned late in the third quarter of this year. Additional jobs may be created in the future as the business grows.
Site Selection and Development
Esslingen was chosen for its suitability to meet Hexion's business needs. The city administration of Esslingen collaborated with Harbert Management Corporation to develop a comprehensive concept for the area, a former Panasonic site where production ceased in 2006.
Industrial and Infrastructure Enhancements
The new Hexion facility will be adjacent to a new Daimler site in Esslingen. Plans are underway to improve infrastructure around the 'Sirnauer Bruecke' area, including the rotary at Fritz-Mueller-Strasse/Sirnauer Bruecke, benefiting Hexion and future companies in Esslingen.
Product and Market Focus
Hexion is a leading global supplier of specialty epoxy resin systems for the wind energy market. The new plant will produce bonding pastes and infusion resins for wind turbine blades, providing the necessary mechanical strength, durability, and stress resistance for modern blades, which can be up to 40-60 meters in length.
