ZESCO Limited is the national electricity utility of Zambia, operating as a vertically integrated company across the full electricity value chain including generation, transmission, distribution, and supply of power.
The company owns and operates numerous hydropower stations with a total generating capacity exceeding 2,900 MW, supplemented by plans to add at least 1,800 MW of renewable energy capacity over the next decade. It maintains an extensive transmission network of over 11,100 km of high-voltage lines and a distribution network spanning more than 56,000 km, serving customers throughout Zambia and facilitating regional power trade through interconnection with the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).
Headquartered in Lusaka, ZESCO Limited is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Zambia via the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). It plays a central role in Zambia's energy sector, representing the country in SAPP and entering into power supply agreements with mining and industrial offtakers, as well as independent power producers. The utility supports economic development by providing reliable electricity to households, businesses, and key industries such as mining in the Copperbelt region.
With over 50 years of operation since its formation in 1970 (rebranded in 1994), ZESCO focuses on innovation, sustainability, and infrastructure modernization to address growing demand and enhance energy security in Zambia and the broader sub-Saharan region.
Also known as Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Limited and Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation.
