WPU - Waste Plastic Upcycling A/S is a Danish company specializing in chemical recycling of end-of-life plastic waste through proprietary batch pyrolysis technology. The process converts unsorted plastic waste into pyrolysis oil, which serves as a circular feedstock for producing chemicals, intermediates, new plastics, or fuels such as naphtha, kerosene, or jet fuel, offering a lower-carbon alternative to fossil-derived materials.
Acquired by Vitol in late 2024 (with full control by early 2025), WPU operates a commercial-scale plant in Fårevejle, Denmark, with a capacity of approximately 20,000–25,000 tonnes per year. The facility runs near full capacity and supplies customers including Braskem via Vitol.
WPU plans to expand with an 80,000 tonnes/year pyrolysis plant at the Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands, adjacent to Vitol's VPR refinery. This integration leverages existing infrastructure, including Vopak storage, and incorporates low-emission furnace technology. The project aims to scale WPU's operations across Europe.
