The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), commonly known as the World Bank, is an international financial institution and the main lending arm of the World Bank Group. Owned by its member countries and headquartered in Washington, D.C., it was founded in 1944 to finance reconstruction and development. IBRD raises most of its funds by issuing AAA-rated bonds in global capital markets and provides loans, guarantees, and technical assistance to middle-income and creditworthy lower-income countries.
For the chemical and materials value chain, IBRD’s work is relevant through financing and policy support for infrastructure and environmental programs, including energy transition, industrial decarbonization, air quality management, water and wastewater treatment, hazardous and solid waste management, circular economy initiatives, and chemicals and pollution control. Projects typically operate under the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework, which sets standards for environmental protection, labor, and community health and safety. Beyond financing, IBRD offers analytical services and capacity building to help governments design regulations and investment programs that affect industrial operations and supply chains.
Also known as IBRD, The Bank, and Banque mondiale.
