Union Carbide Corporation

Union Carbide Corporation is a U.S.-based chemical manufacturer and a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas. The company produces basic and specialty chemicals with a focus on ethylene oxide and its derivatives, including ethylene glycols, ethanolamines, glycol ethers, polyethylene glycols, and related intermediates used in solvents, surfactants, coatings, adhesives, personal care, and industrial applications.

Founded in 1917, Union Carbide has played a significant role in the development of the U.S. petrochemical sector, with long-standing operations on the Gulf Coast and in the Ohio–Kanawha Valley. It became part of Dow in 2001. The company is historically associated with the 1984 gas leak at its former Indian affiliate, Union Carbide India Limited, in Bhopal—one of the world’s most serious industrial accidents—which has had lasting legal, regulatory, and environmental implications for the industry.

Today, Union Carbide operates as an integrated producer within Dow’s portfolio, supplying chemical building blocks and intermediates to global markets and downstream manufacturing networks.
