About Transnet

Transnet SOC Ltd (Transnet) is South Africa’s state‑owned freight transport and logistics company. It owns and operates the country’s core freight rail network, the National Ports Authority and port terminal operations, and a pipeline network for refined petroleum products. Through these assets, Transnet enables the movement of bulk commodities and containerized cargo across South Africa and to global markets.

For the chemical and energy sectors, Transnet provides critical infrastructure for the import, export, and inland distribution of fuels and chemical products. Major ports such as Durban, Richards Bay, Cape Town, and Ngqura handle liquid bulk and dry bulk cargoes, while dedicated rail corridors connect industrial hubs including Gauteng, Durban, Richards Bay, and the Sasolburg/Vaal region. Transnet Pipelines’ network—anchored by the New Multi‑Product Pipeline between Durban and Gauteng—transports petrol, diesel, and jet fuel, supporting downstream petrochemical supply chains. Transnet Engineering designs, maintains, and refurbishes rolling stock such as tank wagons used for hazardous and non‑hazardous chemical logistics.
