Terrafame Ltd is a Finnish mining and battery chemicals company operating an integrated mine-to-chemicals site in Sotkamo, Kainuu. The company extracts nickel, zinc, cobalt and copper from polymetallic ore using bioheap leaching and hydrometallurgical processing, and refines part of its nickel and cobalt into sulphates used in lithium-ion battery cathode materials.
Terrafame supplies battery-grade nickel and cobalt sulphates to the battery value chain, with zinc and copper produced as by-products. The company is majority-owned by state-owned Finnish Minerals Group, with a significant minority holding by Trafigura-affiliated funds. Its operations focus on resource efficiency, energy-efficient processing and improved environmental management following the transition from the former Talvivaara operations.
