Stadtwerke München GmbH (SWM) is the municipally owned utility of the City of Munich and one of Germany’s largest Stadtwerke. It provides core infrastructure services including electricity and natural gas distribution, district heating and cooling, and drinking water supply for Munich and the surrounding region. SWM also operates fiber-optic telecommunications infrastructure and, through Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG), oversees Munich’s public transport.
SWM’s energy portfolio combines conventional and renewable generation with a strong focus on combined heat and power (CHP), hydropower on the Isar, and an expanding program of geothermal district heating in the Munich area, complemented by wind and solar investments. The company operates and maintains local power and heat networks that serve residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Strategic goals include expanding renewable generation to cover Munich’s electricity demand and transitioning district heating toward low-carbon, predominantly geothermal sources. This positions SWM as a key regional provider of reliable energy, heat, and water infrastructure supporting households and industry.
