Sustainable Molecules Ltd (SuMo) is a UK-based advanced conversion technology company specializing in the transformation of residual and non-recyclable waste into clean, carbon capture-ready syngas and sustainable molecules. Founded in 2025 and headquartered in Wednesbury, West Midlands, the company leverages over a decade of development in modular, pressurized advanced gasification technology, demonstrated to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 8 at its Sustainable Molecules Facility (SMF).
SuMo's proprietary platform converts waste and low-grade biomass into low-carbon syngas, which can be upgraded into energy vectors such as renewable methanol, olefins, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrogen, and synthetic methane. The technology emphasizes flexibility across waste types, small footprint, high efficiency (up to 70% waste-to-energy conversion), and deployment at existing waste sites to minimize infrastructure needs.
Key projects include the ClearSkies initiative, funded by the UK Department for Transport, integrating gasification with Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, fuel upgrading, and carbon capture for waste-to-SAF production—a UK first at this scale. SuMo recently commissioned an FT unit with Velocys at SMF and formed a €500m joint venture with Eren Groupe to scale waste-to-molecules projects globally.
