SINOPEC Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology Co., Ltd. (SRIPT), legally known as 中石化(上海)石油化工研究院有限公司, is a leading research and development subsidiary of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec). Established in 1960 as one of China's earliest institutions for petrochemical R&D, it originated from efforts to develop catalytic technology for acrylonitrile production to support synthetic fiber manufacturing.
SRIPT specializes in advancing petrochemical technologies, focusing on olefins and aromatics utilization, catalytic processes for basic and fine chemicals, functional polymers, C1 chemicals, synthetic materials, oilfield chemicals, and specialty chemicals. It has developed proprietary catalysts and complete process technologies, including for acrylonitrile, toluene disproportionation, styrene, ethylene oxide, purified terephthalic acid (PTA), methanol-to-olefins (MTO), and syngas-to-glycol, which are applied in domestic and international plants. Technologies have been exported to regions such as Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
The institute hosts national facilities like the National Engineering Research Center for Basic Organic Raw Material Catalysts and the State Key Laboratory of Green Chemical Industry and Industrial Catalysis, along with several Sinopec key labs. With bases in Shanghai's Pudong New Area and Chemical Industry Zone, plus branches in five Sinopec subsidiaries, SRIPT has earned over 350 awards, including multiple National Science and Technology Progress prizes.
