The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a global, not-for-profit professional association for engineers, scientists, and managers working in the upstream oil and gas sector. Its technical scope spans reservoir characterization and management, drilling, completions, production operations, and health, safety, and environment.
SPE advances technical knowledge and professional development by organizing international conferences and workshops; maintaining a large technical library; and publishing peer‑reviewed journals, books, and the Journal of Petroleum Technology. It also provides training courses and competency resources. In collaboration with partner organizations, SPE is a custodian of the Petroleum Resources Management System (PRMS), a widely used framework for classifying and reporting petroleum resources.
Through a worldwide network of local sections and student chapters, SPE facilitates knowledge exchange and collaboration across established and emerging domains, including digital technologies and carbon capture and storage. Headquartered in the United States, the organization operates globally across key energy-producing regions.
