Rockwood Holdings, Inc. was a U.S.-based specialty chemicals company known for leading positions in lithium compounds and advanced materials, metal surface treatment (under the Chemetall brand), and color pigments and performance additives, including titanium dioxide. Headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, the company operated manufacturing and R&D sites across North America, Europe, and Asia, serving markets such as automotive, electronics, aerospace, energy storage, and general industrial.
Formed in the early 2000s through acquisitions and carve-outs, Rockwood became publicly listed (NYSE: ROC) and pursued a portfolio focused on high-value, technology-driven chemistries. In 2014 it divested its titanium dioxide and performance additives businesses to Huntsman Corporation. In 2015 Rockwood was acquired by Albemarle Corporation, after which its lithium assets formed a core part of Albemarle’s lithium segment; Albemarle later sold the Chemetall surface treatment business to BASF in 2016. Rockwood is no longer an independent company.
