PureField Carbon Capture, LLC is the entity responsible for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) operations at the integrated food and renewable fuels facility in Russell, Kansas, United States. It captures high-purity biogenic carbon dioxide generated during ethanol fermentation from wheat and sorghum processing, compresses and dehydrates the CO2, and transports it via a dedicated underground pipeline approximately six miles to a Class VI injection well for permanent geologic storage in the Arbuckle formation at depths of about 3,448 to 3,606 feet.
The project, permitted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 in April 2026 as the first Class VI well in Kansas and the region, authorizes injection of up to 150,000 metric tons of CO2 per year for 12 years, totaling 1.8 million metric tons. Rigorous monitoring occurs during injection and for at least 50 years afterward to ensure safety and containment, with the CO2 eventually mineralizing into rock for long-term stability.
Operated in conjunction with parent company PureField Ingredients, the CCS initiative enables production of ethanol and vital wheat gluten (under the Heartland brand) with some of the lowest or near-negative carbon intensity scores at commercial scale in the U.S. PureField Ingredients, a privately held company rebranded in 2019 following acquisition by affiliates of Strategic Value Partners, processes around 20 million bushels of grain annually into food ingredients, biofuels, and animal nutrition products. This positions PureField Carbon Capture as a leader in decarbonizing biofuels and supporting U.S. agriculture through sustainable practices and local economic investment exceeding $60 million in Russell County.
