ORNX Green Hydrogen, operating as the Moroccan joint venture ORNX Laayoune 1 SASU, is a commercial company established to develop large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production projects in southern Morocco.
The entity represents a consortium of US-based Ortus Climate Mitigation, Spain’s Acciona, and Germany’s Nordex. It was selected by the Moroccan government under the national “Morocco Offer” program to advance renewable hydrogen and derivatives initiatives, with a primary focus on the Laâyoune region.
The company’s flagship project targets an initial capacity of approximately 560,000 metric tons per year of green ammonia, powered by more than 2 GW of dedicated wind and solar generation, 900 MW of electrolyzer capacity for hydrogen production, battery energy storage, and a seawater desalination plant. Output is intended for export markets in fertilizers, marine fuels, and industrial applications, as well as potential domestic use.
With an estimated first-phase investment of $4.5 billion, ORNX has secured land reservations and obtained a $5.7 million grant from the US Trade and Development Agency to support pre-FEED studies. These studies are being conducted by KBR together with GE Vernova, Electric Hydrogen, and Terabase.
As one of Morocco’s pioneering large-scale green ammonia developments, ORNX contributes to the kingdom’s strategy to become a competitive exporter of low-carbon ammonia, capitalizing on the region’s exceptional renewable resources and port infrastructure.
