Its role Owner
One Carbon Partnership is a privately held joint venture company formed in 2023 to develop and operate carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) projects in the United States.
The company specializes in capturing carbon dioxide emissions from ethanol production processes and permanently storing them in secure deep underground geologic reservoirs through Class VI injection wells. Its main project is situated at the Cardinal Ethanol facility near Union City in Randolph County, Indiana.
With U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approval for a Class VI permit, the partnership is authorized to inject up to 450,000 metric tons of CO2 annually for 30 years, totaling approximately 13.5 million metric tons, while implementing long-term monitoring to protect underground water sources.
One Carbon Partnership operates as an equal 50/50 limited partnership between Cardinal One Carbon Holdings, LLC (a subsidiary of Cardinal Ethanol, LLC, which produces ethanol and co-products in Indiana and Kansas) and Vault CCS Holdings LP (an affiliate of Vault 44.01 Ltd., a CCS developer focused on North American storage assets and backed by Grey Rock Investment Partners).
The entity plays a role in the emerging U.S. CCS sector for biofuels, supporting decarbonization of ethanol production, enabling access to low-carbon fuel markets for agricultural suppliers, and contributing to regional economic development through construction and operations in the Midwest.
