Key activities include investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms of obesity, energy balance, gastrointestinal regulation of metabolism, gut microbiota, and responses to bariatric surgery and other interventions. OMNI also develops and evaluates therapeutic strategies involving nutrition, behavior, pharmacology, and surgery while training the next generation of specialists via fellowships in obesity medicine and nutrition and the long-running Blackburn Course in Obesity Medicine.

Operating within the Department of Medicine at MGH, part of the Mass General Brigham system and affiliated with Harvard Medical School, the institute integrates research with clinical care at the Mass General Weight Center. It contributes to national efforts as an associate site for NIH-sponsored Nutrition and Obesity Research Centers and collaborates on large-scale clinical programs.

Leadership has included Dr. Lee Kaplan as director, who has chaired executive committees for major Phase III obesity trials such as Boehringer Ingelheim’s SYNCHRONIZE program evaluating survodutide. OMNI holds a leading position in U.S. obesity research and medicine, supporting evidence-based approaches to a major public health challenge.
