National Energy System Operator

About NESO

The National Energy System Operator Limited (NESO) is a government-owned public corporation responsible for operating and planning Great Britain's electricity and gas systems. Established under the Energy Act 2023 and fully operational since October 2024, NESO took over from National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) following its acquisition by the UK government.

As the licensed electricity system operator, NESO balances supply and demand in real time to ensure reliable power delivery to homes and businesses 24/7. It also handles strategic planning for electricity networks, long-term forecasting for gas transmission, and provides independent advice to government and regulators on whole-system needs to support the transition to net zero emissions.

Headquartered in Warwick, NESO promotes security of supply, efficiency, economy, and competition in energy markets while considering consumer impacts and innovation. It estimates significant investments, such as £58 billion by 2035, are needed for grid upgrades to enable clean power delivery.
