MAVIR Zrt. (MAVIR Magyar Villamosenergia-ipari Átviteli Rendszerirányító Zártkörűen Működő Részvénytársaság), also known as MAVIR Hungarian Independent Transmission Operator Company Ltd., is Hungary's transmission system operator (TSO). Established in 2000 and operational as TSO since January 1, 2006, it is a subsidiary of the MVM Group, functioning independently under the Independent Transmission Operator (ITO) model to comply with EU unbundling regulations.
MAVIR ensures the secure, reliable, and efficient operation of the Hungarian electricity system. It manages a high-voltage transmission network spanning approximately 3,821 km with 17 substations, maintains system balance, provides reserve capacities, and facilitates non-discriminatory access for all market participants. The company operates ancillary services markets, allocates cross-border capacities, and supports electricity market coupling initiatives like PICASSO and MARI.
As an ENTSO-E member, MAVIR coordinates international cooperation, develops network strategies to integrate renewables amid rising solar capacity, and invests in grid upgrades and battery storage for stability. Licensed by the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority, it plays a vital role in Hungary's energy security and transition.
