Its role Owner
Marquis Carbon Injection LLC is a limited liability company incorporated in the United States that focuses on carbon dioxide capture and geological storage. Based in Hennepin, Illinois, it develops and operates the Marquis Biocarbon Project, which involves injecting biogenic CO2 captured from ethanol fermentation at the nearby Marquis Energy facility into deep saline aquifers.
The project utilizes a Class VI underground injection well permitted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It is designed to sequester up to 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 annually for six years, totaling approximately 9 million metric tons, stored in the Mt. Simon Sandstone formation approximately 3,000 to 4,800 feet underground. Extensive monitoring is required during injection and for 12 years post-injection to ensure environmental safety.
As part of the Marquis group of companies, a privately held, multi-generational family-owned enterprise established in 1975, Marquis Carbon Injection LLC supports the broader goal of creating the world's first carbon-neutral industrial complex. The Marquis Industrial Complex in Hennepin also houses one of the largest dry-mill ethanol plants globally, producing hundreds of millions of gallons of renewable fuel annually, along with animal feed products and plans for sustainable aviation fuel.
In the renewable energy and carbon management industry, the company contributes to decarbonization efforts in the biofuels sector by enabling low-carbon intensity ethanol production through on-site sequestration technology, while bolstering local agriculture and economic development in central Illinois.
