The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping is a non-profit research foundation focused on accelerating the maritime sector’s transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Established to address decarbonization challenges in shipping, the center conducts collaborative research on alternative fuels, energy efficiency, and regulatory frameworks.
Its work includes safety and operational studies on low-carbon fuels such as ammonia. In April 2025, the center led a full-scale ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering demonstration in the Port of Rotterdam under the EU-funded MAGPIE project, confirming that such operations can be conducted safely with appropriate planning, equipment, and regulatory oversight. The resulting guidance supports ports, regulators, and industry stakeholders in preparing for future ammonia adoption.
