The Loan Market Association (LMA) is an industry association for the syndicated loan market across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Established in 1996 and based in London, it brings together banks, institutional investors, law firms and service providers involved in primary and secondary loan markets.
The LMA develops standard documentation, market guidelines and best practices to improve consistency, liquidity and transparency in syndicated lending. It also offers education, market commentary and advocacy on legal and regulatory issues affecting loan market participants. The association does not provide financing; it focuses on setting voluntary standards and supporting market infrastructure.
In sustainable finance, the LMA co-authors and maintains the Green Loan Principles and Sustainability-Linked Loan Principles (with partner associations), which are widely used to structure and assess environmental and sustainability-linked loan products across sectors, including energy and chemicals.
