Its role Owner
Lithion Technologies Inc. is a Canadian clean technology company focused on lithium-ion battery recycling and the recovery of critical minerals for the circular economy.
The company developed and operated proprietary processes combining mechanical dismantling and wet shredding to produce black mass—a concentrate of lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite—followed by hydrometallurgical refining to yield battery-grade materials such as lithium carbonate, nickel sulphate, and cobalt sulphate. Its technologies achieved recovery rates of up to 95% of battery components and 98% of critical minerals while minimizing emissions and waste compared to primary mining.
Headquartered in the Montreal area with its main commercial extraction plant, Lithion Saint-Bruno, in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, the facility opened in 2024 with an initial capacity of 10,000 tonnes per year, scalable to 20,000 tonnes. It processed end-of-life EV batteries, production scrap, and smaller consumer batteries under agreements with partners including Hyundai Auto Canada, Nissan Canada, General Motors, and Call2Recycle.
Backed by over $100 million in investments from venture funds, General Motors Ventures, Investissement Québec, and others, Lithion positioned itself as a key player in North America’s emerging EV battery recycling ecosystem. In October 2025, the company and affiliates entered CCAA protection amid operating losses and liquidity challenges; assets were subsequently sold in 2026.
