LIPOR

About LIPOR

LIPOR is the intermunicipal waste management authority for the Greater Porto region of Portugal, formed by eight municipalities. It plans and operates an integrated municipal solid waste system, coordinating regional strategy, infrastructure, and services across its member cities.

The organization manages facilities for materials sorting and recycling, organic waste recovery (e.g., composting), and energy recovery from non‑recyclable waste, alongside controlled landfill operations and environmental monitoring. LIPOR also develops programs for waste prevention, separate collection (including packaging and bio-waste), and circular-economy initiatives that convert waste into secondary raw materials and energy. Its activities aim to maximize resource efficiency, reduce landfill dependence, and lower greenhouse-gas emissions while supporting municipal and regional sustainability goals.
