Leuna100 project

About Leuna100 project

Leuna100 is a consortium-driven demonstration and scale-up project focused on producing green methanol (e‑methanol) at the Leuna Chemical Park in Germany. It targets the industrialization of power‑to‑methanol pathways that combine renewable hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide to deliver low‑carbon methanol for the chemical value chain and hard‑to‑abate transport applications.

The initiative concentrates on optimizing electricity‑based synthesis gas generation, methanol synthesis, and load‑flexible plant operation, with the aim of validating continuous operation and robust techno‑economics at industrial scale. By enabling circular carbon use and substituting fossil‑derived methanol, Leuna100 seeks to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions while providing a scalable route to sustainable marine and aviation fuels and chemical intermediates.

Backed by public and private partners, the project serves as a platform for testing hydrogen and power‑to‑X technologies under real operating conditions and for developing operating concepts suited to variable renewable power.
