The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is a nonprofit international research and training organization dedicated to rice science and sustainable rice-based agri-food systems. Headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, and part of the CGIAR network, IRRI conducts breeding, agronomy, and systems research to improve productivity, resilience, and nutrition in rice while reducing environmental impacts.
IRRI stewards the International Rice Genebank, develops improved rice varieties, and advances best practices in soil, water, and nutrient management, pest and disease management, and climate adaptation and mitigation. Working with national research systems, governments, and industry partners across Asia and Africa, the institute supports evidence-based policies, capacity building, and technology transfer to enhance food security and farmer livelihoods.
