Italiana Petroli S.p.A. is a leading Italian energy company specializing in the refining and distribution of petroleum products and mobility services. Operating under the IP brand, it runs an integrated downstream business encompassing two refineries with a combined crude processing capacity of approximately 10 million tonnes per year, a nationwide logistics network of storage facilities and pipelines, and a retail network of more than 4,500 fuel stations across Italy.
The company supplies jet fuel to major airports, serves ports, and markets lubricants, bitumen, and other refined products. It has also invested in biofuels, including HVO and sustainable aviation fuel, while co-processing bio-based materials at its facilities. Headquartered in Rome, Italiana Petroli is one of Italy's largest fuel retailers by number of outlets and contributes significantly to national energy security and the mobility sector.
Founded in 1933 as Anonima Petroli Italiana, the group rebranded to Italiana Petroli in 2019 after acquiring TotalErg and other assets. It was previously wholly owned by API Holding of the Brachetti Peretti family. In May 2026, SOCAR, the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan, completed the acquisition of 99.82% of its shares, making it part of the SOCAR international group while committing to operational continuity in Italy.
Also known as Gruppo API, Anonima Petroli Italiana S.p.A., and API.
