IFP Energies nouvelles

IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) is a French public-sector research, innovation, and training organization focused on energy, mobility, and the environment. Originating from the former Institut Français du Pétrole, it operates research centers in Rueil-Malmaison, Solaize (Lyon area), and Pau under the supervision of French public authorities.

For the chemical and process industries, IFPEN conducts R&D in catalysis and adsorbents, reaction and separation engineering, refining and petrochemicals, fuels and lubricants, polymers and materials, as well as low‑carbon technologies including bio‑based chemistry, plastics recycling, hydrogen, batteries, and CO2 capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). Its activities span laboratory research through pilot and demonstration scale, with emphasis on process performance, energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.

IFPEN transfers technologies through patents, licensing, and industrial partnerships, notably via subsidiaries such as Axens (process licensing, catalysts, and equipment) and Beicip‑Franlab (subsurface software and consulting). It also provides professional and graduate education for the sector through IFP Training and IFP School.
