The Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) is Scotland’s innovation hub for industrial biotechnology, focused on accelerating the development and adoption of bio-based processes across the chemicals and materials value chain. It brings together industry, academia, and the public sector to grow the bioeconomy and advance low‑carbon manufacturing.
IBioIC supports companies from start-ups to established manufacturers through collaborative R&D projects, access to expertise and facilities, scale-up guidance, and pathways to funding. Its activities span fermentation, biocatalysis, synthetic biology, and bioprocess engineering, helping to convert sustainable feedstocks and residues into high‑value chemicals, materials, and ingredients.
The centre also delivers skills and workforce development programmes aligned to industry needs and fosters partnerships across sectors including chemicals, food and drink, agriculture, textiles, pharmaceuticals, energy, and waste management. IBioIC’s mission is to de-risk innovation and shorten time-to-market for bio-based solutions that enhance resource efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
