High Tech Binders B.V. is a Dutch startup and TNO spin-off specializing in sustainable asphalt binders. The company develops ECO-Bind, a patented, carbon-negative, bio-based additive that replaces up to 30% of traditional fossil-based bitumen with biopolymers derived from wastewater treatment byproducts, such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) like Caleyda.
ECO-Bind enhances the mechanical properties of asphalt, extends road durability, and sequesters approximately 2 kg of CO2 per kg of biopolymer incorporated, supporting circular economy goals and industry targets for 30% biobased content by 2030. It integrates seamlessly into existing asphalt production without requiring equipment changes.
High Tech Binders has licensed technology from TNO, signed supply agreements with Paques Biomaterials, and collaborates with partners like Breedon, KWS, and OOMS for testing. Commercialization efforts, including proof-of-concept development and on-site trials, are underway, with full-scale rollout anticipated from 2026.
