Green Hydrogen Energy Company Limited, operating as GHECO, is a UK-based joint venture company established in 2023 by Schroders Greencoat, the specialist renewables and energy transition infrastructure manager within Schroders Capital, and Carlton Power, an independent UK energy infrastructure developer. It functions as a dedicated investment and development platform to deploy institutional capital at scale into green hydrogen production projects throughout the United Kingdom.
The company develops, constructs, and operates new-build green hydrogen facilities that produce hydrogen via proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis powered by renewable electricity. Its flagship project is the 30 MW Barrow Green Hydrogen Project in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, which achieved final investment decision in May 2026—one of the first renewable hydrogen facilities in the UK to do so under the government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1) and Hydrogen Business Model. The project features six 5 MW Plug Power GenEco PEM electrolyzers and will supply approximately 100 GWh of green hydrogen annually to industrial offtakers, including Kimberly-Clark’s nearby manufacturing site, while supported by a long-term renewable power purchase agreement with SEFE.
GHECO’s pipeline includes additional sites at Trafford, Greater Manchester, and Langage near Plymouth, with a target of building a 200 MW UK portfolio by 2030. The joint venture structure sees Carlton Power handling project development, construction, and operations, while Schroders Greencoat leads financing. It is majority controlled by SG Green Hydrogen Bidco Limited and maintains its registered office in London. GHECO plays a pioneering role in the UK’s emerging green hydrogen sector, advancing industrial decarbonization, energy security, and the broader energy transition through structured offtake and revenue support mechanisms.
