Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE

About Fraunhofer ISE

Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE (Fraunhofer ISE) is a research institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft based in Freiburg, Germany, and one of Europe’s leading centers for applied research in solar energy and energy systems. The institute develops technologies spanning photovoltaics, power electronics, thermal energy, and energy-efficient buildings, with a focus on integrating renewable energy into reliable, cost-effective energy systems.

For the chemical and process industries, Fraunhofer ISE conducts R&D on hydrogen and Power-to-X pathways, including water electrolysis (PEM, alkaline, and high-temperature), fuel cells, synthetic fuels, and CO2 utilization. Its work covers materials and catalyst development, component and system design, process modeling, techno-economic and life-cycle assessments, and scale-up from laboratory to pilot and demonstration projects. The institute also provides advanced metrology and performance testing for photovoltaic cells and modules, and collaborates with industrial partners, utilities, equipment suppliers, and public bodies to accelerate the deployment of low-carbon energy and feedstock solutions.
