EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH is one of the major operators of natural gas storage facilities in Germany and Europe. Based in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, the company maintains a working gas storage capacity of around 2 billion cubic meters distributed across cavern storage sites in Nüttermoor, Jemgum, and Huntorf in northwestern Germany, as well as Rüdersdorf near Berlin.
The facilities consist of a total of 37 caverns connected to key transmission networks, granting access to the German Trading Hub Europe (THE) market area and the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF). EWE GASSPEICHER provides flexible storage products for both H-gas and L-gas, supporting energy supply security, portfolio optimization, and market trading activities.
Established in 2012 as a wholly owned subsidiary of EWE AG through the transfer of the gas storage business from EWE ENERGIE AG, the company draws on more than 50 years of expertise in building and operating modern gas storage infrastructure. It operates under strict regulatory requirements for transparent and non-discriminatory capacity allocation.
In line with the energy transition, EWE GASSPEICHER is actively pursuing hydrogen storage projects, including the phased conversion of caverns at Huntorf for hydrogen use, as part of broader initiatives like Clean Hydrogen Coastline. This positions the company at the forefront of adapting traditional gas storage for future low-carbon energy systems.
