Escal UGS S.L. was a Spanish limited liability company incorporated in 1998 and registered in Madrid, primarily established as the concession holder and promoter of the Castor underground gas storage (UGS) project. The facility, located approximately 21 km offshore near Vinaròs in Castellón province on Spain's Mediterranean coast, converted a depleted oil field into a natural gas storage site with a designed working gas capacity of around 1.3 billion cubic meters plus cushion gas.
The company's main activities centered on the development, construction, financing, and initial operation of this offshore UGS infrastructure, including 13 wells, wellhead and process platforms, subsea pipelines, and related facilities. It operated as a special-purpose vehicle with majority ownership by Grupo ACS (approximately 67%) and a minority stake held by Canadian partners, including entities linked to Dundee Energy and Castor Limited Partnership (around 33%).
Following seismic events associated with gas injection in 2013-2014, operations were suspended, the concession was relinquished, and the project entered hibernation and eventual decommissioning phases managed by Enagás. Escal UGS S.L. was involved in compensation claims, bond financing, and subsequent litigation, including repayment orders. Recent commercial registry data indicate the company is in insolvency proceedings (concurso), with no active employees or operations, and its registered address in Madrid.
