The ENS Foundation, officially the Fondation de l’École normale supérieure (FENS), is a French non-profit foundation established in 1986 and recognized as a public-interest organization (reconnue d’utilité publique). It supports the strategic development of the École normale supérieure (ENS-PSL), a premier French institution for advanced education and fundamental research in sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
The foundation’s core activities center on fundraising from private donors, companies, and institutions to finance research chairs, student scholarships, innovative projects, equipment, and campus development. It manages corporate partnerships for specialized research chairs, including the recent “Artificial intelligence for chemistry and through chemistry” chair supported by Air Liquide, as well as initiatives in AI, data science, quantitative biology, and sustainability. Additional efforts include heritage preservation, library enhancements, and the operation of the Villa Louis Pasteur for hosting international researchers.
Headquartered in Paris, the foundation operates primarily in France while extending its reach internationally through entities such as Friends of ENS in the United States. As an independent non-profit, it bridges academia and industry, enhances ENS-PSL’s global competitiveness, and contributes to training future scientists and advancing interdisciplinary research excellence in France and beyond.
Also known as Fondation de l’ENS, FENS, École normale supérieure Foundation, and Fondation de l'École normale supérieure.
