Electra is a Boulder, Colorado-based clean iron company founded in 2020. The company develops a patented low-temperature electrochemical-hydrometallurgical process to produce 99% pure iron from a wide range of iron ores, including low-grade and underutilized materials.
The process involves dissolving iron ore in an acidic solution to separate impurities and co-products like silica and alumina, regenerating the acid, and using electricity to electrodeposit pure iron onto metal sheets at around 60°C. Compatible with intermittent renewable energy, it emits oxygen rather than CO₂, enabling low-carbon production for electric arc furnace steelmaking, iron-based batteries, and other applications.
Electra has raised significant funding, including a $186 million Series B in 2025 led by Capricorn Investment Group and Temasek, and secured partnerships with steelmakers like Nucor, POSCO, and Toyota Tsusho. A demonstration facility in Colorado is planned to produce 500 tonnes annually, targeting commercial scale by 2030.
