EET Hydrogen Limited develops large-scale low carbon hydrogen production hubs in the United Kingdom as a key contributor to industrial decarbonisation. Based at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, the company operates at the heart of the HyNet Northwest cluster, one of two initial UK government Track 1 clusters selected for industrial decarbonisation.
The company is advancing two flagship blue hydrogen projects using carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technology. Hydrogen Production Plant 1 (HPP1) has a planned capacity of 350 MW and employs Johnson Matthey Low Carbon Hydrogen technology, with front-end engineering design completed and production targeted for 2027-2028. Hydrogen Production Plant 2 (HPP2) will add up to 1,000 MW using KBR technology. Combined with additional developments including green hydrogen partnerships, the company targets up to 4 GW of capacity by 2030, equivalent to approximately 40% of the UK government’s national hydrogen production goal.
Originally established in 2021 as Vertex Hydrogen Limited through a joint venture between Essar Oil (UK) Ltd (90%) and Progressive Energy Ltd (10%), the entity rebranded to EET Hydrogen in 2023 and transitioned to a standalone pillar within the Essar Energy Transition (EET) portfolio. It supplies low carbon hydrogen primarily to regional industrial offtakers in refining, chemicals, glass manufacturing and power generation, enabling fuel switching from fossil sources while capturing around 2.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually in initial phases.
As one of the UK’s earliest large-scale low carbon hydrogen developers, EET Hydrogen supports job retention and economic growth in Northwest England through partnerships with EPC contractors such as ENKA and technology providers, positioning it as a leader in the emerging hydrogen economy.
