Crystal IS, Inc., headquartered in Green Island, New York, is a U.S.-based subsidiary of Asahi Kasei, acquired in 2011. Founded in 1997 by professors from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the company pioneered the development and commercialization of bulk single-crystal aluminum nitride (AlN) substrates.
Crystal IS specializes in high-performance AlN substrates with low defect densities, high thermal conductivity, and compatibility with standard semiconductor manufacturing processes. It produces 2-inch substrates in commercial volumes and has achieved milestones in 100 mm (4-inch) wafers, including 99% usable area. These substrates serve as a platform for UVC LEDs, RF, and power semiconductor applications.
Historically a leader in UVC LEDs (Klaran series) for water, air, and surface disinfection, Crystal IS is discontinuing UVC LED device production as part of Asahi Kasei's portfolio optimization. The company is refocusing resources on advancing AlN substrate technology to meet growing demands in advanced semiconductors.
