The Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) is Spain’s independent national authority for market oversight and competition. It enforces antitrust law, conducts merger control, and regulates certain network industries to promote efficient markets and protect consumers. Its remit spans sectors such as energy, electronic communications, audiovisual media, transport, and postal services.
In relation to the chemical industry, the CNMC reviews mergers, acquisitions, and commercial practices that may affect competition in Spanish chemical markets, assessing potential impacts on market structure, pricing, and supply. It can approve transactions with conditions and sanction anti-competitive behavior. The authority also oversees competition aspects in energy and infrastructure that are critical inputs and services for chemical production in Spain.
