Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Inc. (CFS) is a U.S. fusion energy company developing compact, magnetically confined fusion power plants. A spin-out from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, CFS was founded in 2018 and is headquartered in Devens, Massachusetts. The company focuses on tokamak designs that leverage high-temperature superconducting (HTS) REBCO magnets to achieve higher magnetic fields and smaller, more efficient devices.
CFS is constructing SPARC, a tokamak intended to demonstrate net energy gain and to validate the design basis for ARC, its first commercial, grid-scale plant concept. The firm has reported successful testing of a large-bore HTS magnet at record field strengths, a key technology milestone. CFS is backed by strategic investors from the energy and technology sectors and collaborates with academic and industrial partners to advance fusion toward commercialization.
